Our warmth filled hostess

A message from MayaJoëlle:

Before I visited Cuba for the first time last year, I was under the impression that tourists were barely able to connect with the people of Cuba. Last year, I co-organized with Marta a group to travel to Habana.  To my surprise, we were able to stay in private homes, booked through AirBnB.  I also discovered that the Cuban people are now able to start small businesses and connect with visitors while improving their quality of life. During our visit we observed, first hand, the creativity and  spirit of community of the Cuban people.

With Alain, our great guide

I loved discovering some fascinating places in Havana and in the countryside of Cuba, enjoying the daily warm sun in February. Most of all, the connections we experienced with the people of Cuba deeply touched my heart. Every day, we had direct and indirect contact with the people of the Island. Their warmth, aliveness and simplicity enchanted me. While I loved the numerous opportunities to use the little Spanish I know, we encountered people everywhere who speak decent English. We were able to learn much about their lives and they about ours. To my delight, I didn’t experience the secrecy I was expecting months before.

We participated in dance classes, yet my favorite musical and dance moments were happening spontaneously in the streets and in restaurants while we ate, or in a small town where over 90 % of the public was local. Viva Cuba!

I am ready to go back, with Marta. Are you?

A lifetime dream fulfilled.

While I do not consider myself a traveler, my desire to visit Cuba over rode my airport stress challenges. My root desire to visit the country originated from our government’s restrictions, and the many stories of our past association, both good and bad with Cuba.

Cuba is a beautiful country, with friendly and welcoming people. The itinerary set up by Marta (who was actually born in Cuba) and MayaJoëlle, could not have provided a more varied experience. Havana was our starting and staging point where we spent many days exploring the city and becoming acquainted with the lifestyle of the locals. One of our day journeys took us to the country side to explore Viñales and the valley of Viñales. Everyone was so pleased with their experience in Viñales that MayaJoëlle felt it would be worthwhile on future trips, to spend a few days in the area.

The final leg of our journey took us to the beach at Varadero, about two hours drive from Havana. While this area is more oriented toward tourists, I found it to be a pleasant experience and more accommodating to someone like my self who does not speak Spanish.

All of our lodging was through AirBnB, which certainly gave us the cultural experience and a deeper connection with Cuban natives. I consider this to be a highly recommended experience.
